Corinthians 15.1-4 sums up the fundamental Christian belief: Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again for the salvation of those who accept it by faith. Christianity is different from other beliefs in that it is more a personal relationship than a religious practice. Instead of a list of do’s and don’ts, the goal of a Christian is to have an intimate relationship with God made possible by the work of Jesus Christ. and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
In addition to these fundamental beliefs, other elements are, or at least should be, representative of the Christian faith. Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, “breathed” by him, and that his teaching is the final authority in matters of faith and life ( 2 Timothy 3,16 , 2 Peter 1: 20-21 ). Christians believe in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.
Christians believe that mankind was created specifically to relate to God, but that sin separates him from him ( Romans 5.12, Romans 3.23 ). Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ, both fully God and fully human ( Philippians 2.6-11), came to earth and died on the cross. Christians believe that after his death he is resurrected and is now at the right hand of his Father and continually intercedes for believers ( Hebrews 7:25 ). Christianity proclaims that Jesus’ death on the cross is sufficient to pay the price of sin for all men and restore the broken relationship between God and man ( Hebrews 9: 11-14 , Hebrews 10: 10, Romans 6,23, Romans 5: 8 ).
Christianity teaches that in order to be saved and to enter heaven after our death, we simply have to put all our faith in the work of Christ on the cross. If we believe that Christ died in our place to pay the price for our sins and is resurrected, we are saved. There is only one person to do to deserve his salvation. No one can be “good enough” to please God by his own efforts, for we are all sinners ( Isaiah 64 : 6-7 , Isaiah 53: 6 ). We have nothing left to do because Christ has already done everything! On the cross, he said, “All is accomplished” ( John 19:30 ), which means that he had completed his work of redemption.
According to Christianity, salvation is to be released from our old sinful nature for a restored relationship with God. We who were once slaves of sin are now slaves of Christ ( Romans 6: 15-22 ). As long as believers are on earth, in their sinful body, they will continue to struggle with sin. They can, however, be victorious in studying and applying the Word of God in their lives and in being guided by the Holy Spirit, that is, by submitting to Him in our daily lives.
So while many religious systems involve a do’s and don’ts list, Christianity implies believing that Christ died on the cross for our sins and that he is resurrected. The price of our sins has been paid and we can be in communion with God. We can win the victory over our sinful nature and live a relationship of obedience to God. This is true Biblical Christianity.
